Females are smaller. The biggest ones max out at 2.4 meters and 168 kg. But size isn’t the only adaptation. To survive the Russian winter, they evolved dense, coarse fur. Underneath that coat lies a layer of body fat up to 4 cm thick. It’s an insulating shield against the cold.
They are solitary hunters. No prides here. They stalk wild boars, badgers, raccoon dogs, sika deer, and small Asiatic black bears. There are stories of them taking down adult brown bears, but those reports remain unconfirmed. The evidence is shaky.
Why the Population Is Fragile
Conservation status is a moving target. Before 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed them as critically endangered. Now, they are classified as endangered. The shift is significant. It suggests some progress, but not enough to breathe easy.
The biggest problem is fragmentation. Populations are largely disconnected. Males and females from different groups rarely meet. This isolation stops gene flow. Inbreeding becomes a real risk. Genetic diversity is already low. It stems from a population crash in the 1930s. Overhunting left only 20 to 30 survivors.
